What Is Bavarian Meatloaf? How to Serve Leberkäse
What Is Bavarian Meatloaf? A Guide to Leberkäse
A golden crust, a tender texture and a rich, savoury flavour. Bavarian meatloaf, traditionally known as Leberkäse, is a much-loved classic of German and Austrian cuisine.
From a freshly toasted bread roll with sweet mustard to a hearty meal served with warm potato salad, Leberkäse is a versatile traditional favourite. At Eve Smallgoods, our Bavarian Style Meatloaf brings this European classic to Australian tables, made in Queensland by our family-owned and operated business.
Whether you're discovering Leberkäse for the first time or looking for new ways to enjoy it, here's how to serve this traditional smallgood at home.
What Is Leberkäse?
Leberkäse is a traditional Bavarian and Austrian meatloaf made from 100% Australian pork, combined with seasoning and baked until a golden-brown crust forms.
Despite its name, which translates roughly to "liver cheese", the traditional Bavarian version generally contains neither liver nor cheese. Instead, it is known for its smooth, fine texture and mild, savoury flavour.
Unlike a conventional sliced meatloaf, Leberkäse has a fine consistency, making it ideal for cutting into thick slices and pan-frying until golden on the outside while remaining tender inside.
At Eve Smallgoods, our approach to traditional smallgoods is shaped by five generations of European craftsmanship. We value quality, heritage and time-honoured traditions, bringing generations of experience to the products we make today.
How to Serve Bavarian Meatloaf
One of the best things about Bavarian meatloaf is its versatility. It can be enjoyed hot or cold, served simply in a bread roll or made the centrepiece of a hearty meal.
1. The Traditional Bavarian Bread Roll
Known as Leberkäsesemmel, this classic combination is a popular choice in Bavaria. Thick slices of warm Leberkäse are tucked into a fresh bread roll and often served with mustard.
Method
-
Cut the Bavarian Style Meatloaf into slices approximately 1-1.5 cm thick.
-
Heat a little butter in a frying pan over medium heat.
-
Pan-fry the slices for approximately 2-3 minutes per side, until golden and heated through.
-
Place in a fresh bread roll and finish with Bavarian sweet mustard or your favourite mustard.
Serving suggestion: Add sliced pickles for extra crunch, or top with a fried egg for a hearty breakfast inspired by Leberkäse mit Ei.
2. Served Cold on a European-Style Platter
Leberkäse is also an easy addition to a smallgoods platter, making it ideal for relaxed entertaining or a simple lunch.
How to serve it
-
Slice thinly and arrange on a serving board.
-
Add cornichons, radishes, pickled onions and rye crackers.
-
Include a selection of European cheeses and grainy mustard.
-
Serve alongside fresh bread for an easy sharing platter.
The mild, savoury flavour pairs well with tangy pickles, crusty bread and traditional condiments.
3. Pan-Fried with Warm Potato Salad
For a comforting meal, pair golden pan-fried Leberkäse with warm potato salad. The contrast between the crisp exterior of the meatloaf and the tender potatoes makes this a satisfying combination.
Method
-
Slice the Bavarian meatloaf into thick pieces.
-
Heat a little butter in a frying pan and cook the slices for approximately 2-3 minutes per side, until golden and heated through.
-
Prepare a warm potato salad with waxy potatoes, finely diced onion, vinegar, stock and a little oil.
-
Season to taste and finish with fresh chives.
Serving suggestion: Serve with mustard and braised red cabbage for a traditional European-inspired meal.
